Student Activities

The Student Council members at Caraway are selected from each homeroom by their classmates. Leadership, academics, and excellent behavior are qualities the students must possess. The Student Council does many things for the school and also has a big involvement within the community. Some of the activities they sponsor include the Thanksgiving lunch for the senior citizens, Christmas caroling for the retirement home and the Valentine Carnation sale.
Students audition to be selected for this service-based organization. Selection is based on an interview and a talent(performing, speaking, art ability, etc.)The organization assists the school with Red Ribbon Week and collections for charities. Ms. Wanza is the sponsor.
Sixth grade students may choose Band as their elective. It is a full year class with Mr. Jones as the teacher. This is beginning band in preparation for middle school. Students perform at the Fall Band Concert and again in the Spring Band Concert. Students individually perform in front of judges at the Aldine Solo and Ensemble competition and the scoring rank could be good, excellent or superior.
The Cougar Dance Team serves as an introduction to the Fine Arts for 5th and 6th grade girls. At the beginning of the school year, auditions are held. Once selected, the girls must keep passing grades in all subjects and maintain an excellent to satisfactory conduct grade throughout the year. The Cougar Dance Team performs at various school sponsored events including the Black History Program and TAKS Pep Rallies. The sponsor is Ms. Mosley.
The Environmental Club, under the sponsorship of science teacher Andreana Reeves, has also been spreading the word outside the school walls by picking up trash in their neighborhoods, recycling, and conserving energy. This year, the Environmental Club has already had a poster contest for America Recycles Day. We will be working with the art club on a mural entitled "The Art of Science." The mural will be entered into a contest for CAST, a science teachers conference. If chosen, our mural would be the cover design for the conference program. We will continue our paper recycling program, which is growing this year because we received blue recycling bins for each classroom through a grant from We will focus on water conservation and air quality later in the year. Finally, we will sell Earth day shirts again this year and have an Earth Day celebration in April. We hope to make Caraway an environmentally friendly school!
The Spanish Club enjoys meeting after school to practice the Spanish language and to demonstrate a greater knowledge of the culture associated with the language. They prepare for the annual Aldine Language Fair competition.
Math Club
The Math Club provides students the opportunity to focus on real world mathematics applications. The club is for students who want to do their part to make math more visible in and around Caraway as well as to promote higher order thinking skills. Some of our activities include: chess club, Pi day, and Math Olympics. Sponsors are Ms. Harrison, Ms. Rodriguez & Ms. Victor.
Each year 5th and 6th grade students prepare for the Caraway Spelling Bee. The school event is held in March and the school winner advances to the district level competition.
Black History Bowl
February is Black History Month. The Knowledge Bowl is held during a student assembly and provides the students an opportunity to increase their knowledge of African American history. Students become aware of the many influential people who have contributed significantly to America. Panels of students representing homerooms compete against each other. Questions are posed as well as, dramatizations, pictures and voices.
Sports Day
Each year the Physical Education Department hosts a fifth and a sixth grade sports day. Each homeroom selects students to participate in various events. This is a fun day for the students, faculty and parents in our community.
